Hello, I am a new member looking for good sites to see lots of trains in the greater St. Louis area. I will have my two young (5yrs and 2yrs) children with me so sites where trains can be viewed from the comfort of the car would be greatly appreciatted. Thanks

    John,

Welcome to Trainboard it's always good to see new members posting for the first time. I'm sure there is a member here who can help with your inquiry.

Once again welcome to Trainboard if you have any questions about this site feel free to email me, we also have a FAQ page which answers most questions.

It shouldn't be too hard. I think a major (50+ trains per day) cross the Mississippi just south of the Arch. There's a long elevated main IIRC that parrallels the main highway. It's a UP main line so you might want to ask in the UP forum for a good vantage point.

I also remember seeing a lot of trains along the river on the West bank just north of downtown – but again if I remember correct that’s not a nice neighborhood (I’ve been there a few times and would not recommend bringing the kids)

John, if you can get your hands on a July 2001 Railfan and Railroad Magazine, there is an excellent article about railfanning St. Louis, with directions, hints on places to avoid, frequency of traffic, etc.
