I have just returned from the Severn Valley Railway here in England. Today at this museum railway there was a special event to celebrate the role that horses have played over the years. For almost 100 years horses were used by the railway companies to haul merchandise to and from the railheads and also to shunt (switch) wagons in freight yards. The event was sponsored by the English Welsh and Scottish Railway (EWS) the largest railfreight company here in the U.K. and featured the naming of one of their Class 60 freight locos. The Class 60’s were the last freight locos built by British Rail before privatisation and were inherited by the American owned EWS company. Since privatisation all EWS locos have been built by GM. The photos show the loco after the naming ceremony and one of the 4 legged guests. John.
Great pics John-guess what? I drive these engines and I have'nt had this one yet! These engines ride like a Pullman coach and are very comfortable from the crew point of view-bit cramped in the cab but you can't have every-thing. Best wishes Steve
