I miss coming to this spot in my hometown of Harrodsburg, KY to see trains curve around the 90° tight turn heading west to Louisville. What I don’t miss is the “steel-on-steel” noises that it creates when they do negotiate the tight curves in Harrodsburg. Speed limit is 15mph. Harrodsburg, KY January 19, 2023 (P.S. Back home for not good reasons-funeral services for my Dad.) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
My condolences, Buddy! At least you got a neat train photo. I dislike the flange squeal in the city, but in the mountains it seems to be more agreeable to me. I don't know why.
My deepest sympathies. We lost my Dad almost four years ago, and I miss him daily. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
Even though we know, our whole lives, we will eventually lose our parents, it is devastating when it actually happens. My dad - 2003 and mom - 2016. Sorry for your loss, Buddy. Doug
My condolences, Buddy. Your father must have been a good man - bringing you up straight is proof of that. Take care, and take the time.
From the John W. Barriger III National Railroad Library is this photo of Charleston, SC's Union Station, completed in 1907 by the ACL and SOU. The SAL used station too until 1931 when it opened its own station north of town. Charleston is on a peninsula, so to maintain schedules, ACL's fastest passenger trains avoided the time-consuming backup move to the station and instead used a smaller station in North Charleston and bussed passengers downtown. Charleston Union Station was destroyed by fire in 1947. [Dan K.]
I miss the "per diem" boxcars from the 1970s that were seen everywhere back then, colorful and graffiti free. Took this picture of one month old LEF&C 1290 at Knoxville, TN on 03/31/1979. Sadly, the little 15 mile road called it quits in 1993.
They have an awesome painting facility at the GATX plant in Hearne to paint tank cars but it took them a while to paint their plant switchers. March of 2010. Brand new paint job in April of 2016.
Not long after the UP took over the Missouri Pacific, an SP local heads west on the Sunset Route through Sugar Land.
The iron fence surrounding the 1912 Soo Line depot lines the ROW as an eastbound CP empty grainer rumbles thru Soo Tower at MP 469 eastbound.
I agree Hardcoaler, all the "per diem" boxcars were cool to see. As for the LEF&C boxcar that is looking brand new in your shot, I saw another example of that car 44 years later in Saginaw TX on Sunday 1/15/2023 that didn't look anywhere near as good but was still a great catch.
That is absolutely amazing to have come across a matching car! VERY cool. Isn't it amazing these "per diems" are now 40+ years old?! AN 5556 at Knoxville, TN, 02/03/1979, built 08/1978.
