My Dad was traveling today, 11-30-01, an told me he saw a WC Locomotive with "United We Stand" on the side. I know my dad's perception is going, I'm guessing it was the Operation Lifesaver SD45. Has anyone seen or heard of it!? Is it true, possibly a Sept 11th memorial train? The worst part is he wasn't smart enough to get pictures! Josh
I think what he saw was the engine with the flags on it.They are the flags or coat of arms of each state and province the WC has trackage in.I have this unit on video tape from this summer.I think it was a SD 40-2(did WC have any?)if not it was a SD45. never mind,I just checked my tape and it says"our rail heritage"on the side. It's unit number 3027 a GP. SD45's are common though & the "flags" loco & "150 Years Of Railroading" have both been up here... (I wanna see 6498 [7498?] first hand!)
Just for the record: Specially painted WC locomotives: SD45- 7551 "Customer Minded Employees" 6513 "Richard B. Ogilvie" 7520 "FVW 1st/ WC 7th Anniversary" 7525 "Operation Lifesaver" (square logo) 7638 "Operation Lifesaver" (lightning stripe) GP40-2 3026 "Map Engine" (Wisconsin Map) 3027 "Flag Engine" (State/Province flags) There has been no WC unit painted for United Way, nor has there been anything painted "United We Stand". WC did however apply the small American flags on the battery boxes again following 9-11. There were two other units specially painted, WC SD45 6655 (first #) was painted for WC's first anniversary, unit has since been scrapped; and WC GP40 3015 was named "Ralph C. Bryant" and was wrecked at Green Bay 1-95. George Widener CN WC Division Engineer WC 7638 Operation Lifesaver paint scheme designer
