This hardbound 200+ book was written by my father, L.M. "Mike" Hurley, an old-school Santa Fe trainman who did about everything railroad-wise, but mostly conductor and brakeman (both freight and passenger). Gives in-depth view of passenger and freight operations, 200+ pages of b/w photos of steam engines, cars, personnel, buildings, maps, aerials... plus tons of researched info about everything it took to keep the trains running. Great for historians and modelers. What Dad didn't know, he asked the old heads. I doubt you'll find this information elsewhere! As one person said, "It is one of the few books I have read which details some of the minutia of operations in the steam era." We've received orders from as far away as Australia from the Web. Here's a link that tells about it: http://www.thekansan.com/stories/122201/fro_1222010009.html If you'd like to order one for the prepublication price of $34.95 (plus $5 s/h), send a check or money order to me by Jan. 24 to: Kim Benson 1608 Morningside Road Newton, KS 67114 316-284-2674 Print date: March 2002.
Kim, Thanks for the information. This sounds like a great book and I am sure that there will be many takers. I hope to place an order with you in the next day or two! John
Kim, my Dad and I spent many hours going through and talking to the roundhouse personel at Newton. I was born and raised at Wichita! Small world. My check will be mailed to you tomorrow, save me a copy!
I was born in Newton Wayne but that would have been some generations after your departure from the area. Charlie
I knew you were a Jay Hawker Charlie! I may have one foot in the "PIT" and the other slippin', but I haven't "departed" (yet)! I would go back to those days in a heartbeat if there was a way! Best years of my life were enjoyed living there!
I've had this book from the first printing, worth every penny! I grew up near Newton in Hesston, KS. Every Santa Fe fan should have this book. Jerold
