I was out of the hobby for a long time. I have a enough stuff to stock a hobby shop. Starting slow. Building a 3 by 8 waterfront scene. Still in the planning stage. I cut apart a large box so I can plan it out in 1 to 1 scale on the floor. Easier to move pieces of track and stuff around to see how it will look before I start cutting foam and homosote. I have been looking online at pictures to get some inspiration. I have a lot of questions only because so much has changed. And the biggest change is today I have online pictures for inspiration and tons of video's for how to questions. I just watched several hours of DCC stuff since I will be converting a few loco's. And if I get struck by lightning and build bigger, I will need to wire the world for both DCC and common rail. Gotta figure out a way to make that foolproof. There used to be an exclusive train hobby shop nearby. They have long since gone out of business so I am looking for a well stocked shop near me in the Seattle area along with some popular mail order outfits.
Welcome to TrainBoard! There are some good hobby shops in the great Puget Sound area. Also, during the year a few swap meets where you can find good deals. Also, be sure to check out our advertisers here at TrainBoard. http://www.trainboard.com/highball/index.php?threads/policy-trainboard-posts-about-retailers.40760/
Welcome here, Steve, as the other members have said. Kent, that would be Washington? Or elsewhere? Sounds like your enthusiasm will produce some great results.
Thanks guys, that is Kent Washington, a bit south of Seattle. I am going to visit a couple club layouts next month and attend a train show in Tacoma at the museum. I have so far decided I want a SW-7 or similar switcher for playing around on the diorama. Looking at imports with sound/DCC or possibly installing the sound myself. First gotta find a switcher. Initially its going to be rather expensive just so I can switch a few cars on my waterfront scene. And I really want to listen to the different sound options before I buy. That might be difficult. I am not sure the sound you get on a utube video is enough to judge by.
