Rich Meyer of Champ Decals died last Saturday

According to the Minot Daily News. Richard Louis Meyer, 76, Minot, died at home on Saturday September 6.

He was the owner of Chanp Decals. As I recall, he was slowly shuting down his business to give modelers time to stock up on our needs. After everything was closed, he was going to spend time with his family and his train hobby.

I for one, still have a number of Champ decals that I have bought over the years and far prefer them to others that I have used. They seem to stay good for years.

Looking through my decals, I find several NYC and PRR secals still waiting to be used.

First it was Herald King, and now Champ.

    This is indeed sad news.

I met Rich at the 1968 NMRA Convention in San Francisco. A close friend of mine ( who has also gone to the big model railroad in the sky) invited me to his home to meet Rich and his wife.

They were both wonderfuf people and I enjoyed the short time we had together. His stories and his quick wit were the best.

The model railroad community has lost a truly great man. His constant smile no matter how bad things got, his willingness to share his knowledge with others and his love for the hobby will be truly missed.

    Certainly is sad news.

I hope that somehow his family will insure that his product line is picked up by another quality manufacturer? For it to simply fade away would be difficult to watch.
