    Fitz,

I don't think injectors by themselves have nearly the effect on preheating water as a true feedwater heater does.

By preheating the water, you help limit the disruption to the adiabatic cycle which measures the effect of adding cold water to the already-heated water and steam inside the boiler. In essence, you shock the system more with cooler water being added. You shock it much less when you pre-heat the water before dumping it into the boiler.

Might be Helper, Utah, judging by the store in the background... Helper Lock & Storage

Rob, you are right. The injectors didn't preheat the water very much. Feedwater heaters did. Dumping cold water into the boiler drops the pressure quickly. Gosh I hadn't heard the word "adiabatic" since college heat transfer courses. Let's see, entropy, enthalpy....................:tb-biggrin:

That's one of the 14 ex N&W 2-8-8-2's that Rio Grande bought during WWII to help with their traffic surges. They were very similar to the 3500-3509 series of USRA clone 2-8-8-2 compounds that Rio Grande acquired from Alco in 1927 and were classified in the 3550 series.

Sorry. I meant to hit 'quick reply' and hit 'quote' instead. Couldn't figure out a way to get out of it. Still new at this, LOL!

No it's cool, just wasn't sure why the post seemed directed at me.

It does bring up an idea that floats around in my head from time to time. Since the D&RGW had a fairly good relationship back in the day, in fantasy land what kind of relationship would the Rio Grande and Norfolk Southern have today?

Like I said, just one of those few neurons in my mind that floats around from time to time.

Considering the Grande's entry in to Kansas City back in the 80's, and the NS's presence in the same town, I envision joint coal trains, piggyback and high-priority freights out of the east coast, and grain trains out of the midwest.

    Thread hijack!

Only if things were done slightly different... Pacific Grande Southern... Denver & Rio Southern... Denver & Norfolk

    Josh:

An interesting concept. Oddly enough, though Rio Grande bought quite a few locos from N&W during WWII (14 2-8-8-2, 1 2-6-6-2 and about 5 4-8-2's), for some strange reason I always think of the Chesapeake and Ohio as being the eastern steam 'version' of Rio Grande. And if you asked me, I really couldn't explain it--it's just that as lot of those C&O locos always reminded me of Rio Grande steam--handsome, efficient and ready to tackle anything.

And oddly enough, those C&O H-7 2-8-8-2's looked VERY close to the Rio Grande L-131 2-8-8-2's, at least 'cosmetically'. And something about those Allegheneys (at least from the front) remind me of the second order of Rio Grande L-105 4-6-6-4's from Baldwin.
Or maybe it's just me, LOL!

I am of the majority (I believe) that hates the fact Union Pacific is vanishing any relation to the Rio Grande. I was perturbed when Rio Grande purchased Southern Pacific and yet decided to use that name.

But, on top of that, in a wierd way I would have had no problem if D&RGW merged with SP and later was taken over by Norfolk Southern rather than UP.

Must be the big black diesels and no nonesense, git-r-done attitude or something.
