My question is - approximately how much space will I need to rise to the 3" level? Also, what degree should I rise at? HO scale. Thanks, Jeff

That would depend on how steep you want the grade.

If you want reliable operation for a single locomotive pulling a train no longer than about 10 cars, keep the grade below 2 1/2%. Longer trains or multiple powered locomotives will change that figure plus/minus. A 2% grade is very nice, a 3% is starting to get steep.

I assume the 3" figure you have listed is to crossover another track. If the assumption is correct, don't forget about the roadbed/bridge thickness. Your 3" may change to 4" if your roadbed is 1" thick (1/2" plywood w/1/2" homasote for example).

The way to calculate the distance required to rise a certain amount is:

    Rise / Grade = Length

    3" / 2% (0.02) = 150"

Don't forget to have a transition from level to grade. I typically start with 1/2% for about 6" then 1% for 6" then 1 1/2% for 6" and then finally to 2%. You will also need to do the same thing at the top of the grade.
