From the DRGW/RGMHS Yahoo groups: Bob LeMassena, well known for his knowledge of railroads and especially articulated steam locomotives, passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at age 99. Bob authored many volumes on railroad history and technology, several for the museum as rail annuals. He was a volunteer at the museum until age 97. I interviewed Bob two years ago for details on D&RGW 2-8-8-2s 3500 series and from him learned that a compound articulated must be started as a simple articulated with steam to all four cylinders. This was the reason for the additional piping from the high pressure cylinders to the smokebox. Bob was the ultimate authority on the technology of the steam locomotive, and he left much of it to us in his books. Bob has been cremated, and his ashes will be scattered at Tennessee Pass - what a fitting place for him. A memorial service will probably be arranged at the museum in the near future, and I will send out details as I learn them. - John Manion As John states, details when heard.
I've had the fortune to talk with him, usually during the GTE shows in Denver. Also a couple other local train shows. Picked up a few small, cheap Rio Grande items that I was interested in. Nice individual to talk with! Missed by many!!
Sad to hear of his passing and my condolences tot he family. I have a Lamassena book, now it's even more treasured. Extra 3619 west, highball Tennessee Pass... High greens, Bob!
Sad news. He photographed a lot of railroads. I never met him but certainly looked up to his talents.
