How do I keep my vintage Lionel track from rusting?

That track can rust quite easily. You could probably put a light coating of WD40 on the rails. But then you'll pick that up on wheels, which will collect dirt.

What type of area do you have for your trains? Is it inside the house? Garage? Outbuilding? Kept warm and dry? Humidity troubles?

You might want to try No Ox. We've discussed it over on the N scale forum and a lot of the guys are having success with the product.

A search will most likely turn up the discussion. Well...I did a search and turned up nothing.
I will give it a go later.

Here we go: Track Cleaning - TrainBoard.com

Something else you might consider is swapping out the old Lionel track with Atlas O Scale sectional track. A much finer product designed to last and gives great service.

I built a layout using the Atlas track, CarGraves and Weavers track. A interesting combination. The track that was designed much like Lionel is giving him trouble while the Atlas track is out performing the others. Something, to think about.

I have both of my layouts in the basement of our house. The basement is uninsulated, and yes I do have A LOT of troubles with humidity.

Without insulation, there will be difficulties as long as you are downstairs. Even a dehumidfier will not resolve this issue. I hope there is some type of heat source? Windows to open and circulate fresher air?

You'll need to try some of those suggested anti-corrosives, different track, or simply keep after it. I was in a situation much as you describe, all during my youth. Nothing I could do but live with it. You might be able to help with vapor barriers and insulation. Check with your local power company. They sometimes offer incentives to insulate. Reduced cost or even free. Plus tax credits.

Well, I do have a window down there, but when it gets too humid outside, we usually close all the windows to turn on the AC. And yes, I do have a wall mounted gas heater that we use in winter. Trust me it works!
