    Class 16 locos compare to the North American Pacific locos.
    16Cs were numbered 802 to 838.
    16DAs were numbered 844 to 873.
    16Ds were numbered 860 to 865.
    16Es were numbered 854 to 859.
    The drivers are 5' 3" in diameter.
    These were circa 1926 and used on the Johannesburg Capetown run. They were known as "BIG BERTHA'S" From the Baldwin Loco Works. Thanks to Jimmy B for the information.

    That is rotary poppet valve gear on the 16, right? I seem to remember that there was another class, 15CA? with this type of gear. The CA stands for Canadian, I think?

    After seeing these pics, I will dig out my SAR books [​IMG]

    Robin, I think I'm guest #13 and enjoyed my trip around your site! May I buy a copy of the drawing of "rndhse" that shows the roundhouse from the rear, and the doors 1905?

    Hey Watash, the price is right. IT'S FREE so take and use whatever you want. Mind you a check is always welcome. Are you sure you want my snail mail address. It costs an arm and a leg to send anything from here to you so am sure the reverse is true.

    So I dug out my books, and find that my memory was incorrect :confused: The 15CA did not have rotary valve gear, and they were not built in Canada :( Although some others were.

    23 15CA were built in 1926 by Alco, and 4 in 1929 by Baldwin. Breda built 10 in 1929, then the bulk of the class, 47 units, built 1928-30 by North British.
