Our new motors have metal shafts so getting the flywheels off with a small gear puller will work. The ceramic shafts had their advantages, but for those of us who can't leave well enough alone, it made conversions to difficult. I've been working with the existing worm gear and you can mount it in a small lathe and drill it out so it press fits on the shaft of the motor. I also may have found a source for long stock worm gears...like blind bolts that you cut to length. This might make a interesting solution for different wheel base models. Great work so far Dave! I just read David's updated pages on this. First I have no idea how the MT diesels are built, so the gear puller I listed may not help and I doubt it would be able to reach around the flywheel. But it is a very handy and cheap tool to have. The method he listed to remove the flywheel works great and is why you should always save broken drill bits.
