I am looking for the method of operation used on the SAL Abbeville Sub in 1966. I know it was at least ABS because I have seen photos in 1961 with signals at Catawba, SC, but I don't know when CTC went in. Also, what is the best way to find out this info? In other words, where is the best place to source old SAL timetables? I don't think I have ever come across them at any of the collectables shows I have attended. Jamie
Jamie - I've never seen a Georgia division t/t either. The ones I have are for the Carolina and Virginia divisions. However, In Robert Wayne Johnson's fine book, "Through The Heart Of The South" on page 65 is a photo of a typical SAL 3-light signal (with "dolly" arm) and the caption reads "continuing an ambitious Centralized Traffic Control program begun in 1941, Seaboard signalmen install a CTC signal at Greenwood, S.C. in December 1960. By 1965, the railroad had 1,754 miles of main controlled by CTC." I would think that by 1966, the line from Atlanta to Hamlet would have had CTC installed. And, while I don't have a Georgia division t/t, I have compiled a list of the 5 numbered freights per day between Atlanta - Hamlet, giving the leave/arrive times from which you could estimate travel times over the line. Another good source might be the "Q&A Forum" on the ACL/SAL HS web site.
