Can anyone shed any light on which period Santa Fe used these silver/red passenger cars, and on what routes? Also, what equipment was used to pull them? I've never seen any reference to them (which isn't saying much, of course), so any help I can get would be appreciated

This is a bogus dream scheme that was never run by Santa Fe. Model Power did these to give some color to the old Lima cars that they sold. They were aimed more at the Toy market and needed something flashy I guess. The closest may be the Valley Flyer that was a "temporary" train that ran in central California in the 30s in conjunction with some exposition going on. However it had more than just a red stripe and they were all along the lower edge of the sides.

Thanks, Russ, that's what I suspected but weren't sure of. [IMG]

Fortunately no one else picked up on this and continued that paint scheme. Con Cor has run a few other ATSF dream schemes. They did the Valley Flyer scheme on their smooth side light weight cars. (The Valley Flyer was a heavyweight train) Then they did the "Blue Goose" paint scheme to match their similarly painted 4-6-4 steam lined steam engine. The one engine was the only piece of equipment ever painted that way. My favorite bogus paint scheme is the green Santa Fe stock car. The ATSF always painted their stock cars box car red. However every model maker worth their salt has released a green Santa Fe stock car. This goes back to Lionel when they were milking their cattle car with the auto loader for all it was worth. Instead of cows they put horses with the loader. Someone must have called Santa Fe up and asked if they had special "horse cars" to transport horses. The answer would have been yes to that question. The next question to follow was probably "What color are they?" Well, everyone knows horse cars were painted Pullman Green as they were really specially modified passenger baggage cars. Somehow this fact was not discussed or Lionel chose to ignore it. They released a Santa Fe green panted stock car lettered as a horse car and everyone has painted ATSF stock cars green ever since.

    Russell-

That might be the best explanation I've heard yet about the mysterious green stockcars! Hehe... [IMG]

I have one of these Hallmark commemorative ornaments. The green stock car says SANTA FE, RAILWAY EXPRESS AGENCY, 3356, HORSE EXPRESS on the side.

    How funny!

And Santa Clause got his red color from Coca Cola, and today you wouldn't find a person who'd think of Santa wearing any other color...
