SARATOGA SPRINGS -- The magical spell of a toy train running around a Christmas tree doesn't fade for some enthusiasts.

On Saturday, about 250 members of the Lionel Operating Train Society will share their love for model trains with Capital Region residents at the Saratoga Springs City Center during the group's 27th national convention.

"This is the first time that one of the four national model train conventions have been held in the Capital Region," said Tony Rudmann of Colonie, one of the convention co-hosts.

Rudmann still possesses his childhood fascination with trains.

"I got my first train for Christmas in 1946. I still have it and it still runs," Rudmann said.

Bob Taylor of Saratoga Springs, another convention co-host, said LOTS wants to encourage an interest in model railroading among children and adults. The society will have various operating train layouts on display at the city center.

The convention will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the city center at 522 Broadway. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under 16 and active military, firefighters and police officers.

In addition to the running model trains, there will be model train dealers and informational seminars and programs.

If it's Saratoga Springs, New York, it's about 200 miles north of New York City. (best known as the site of the Battle of Saratoga during the Revolutionary War).

Since Darren posted the notice, it MUST be Saratoga Springs, NY, because the D&H runs, or ran, through there.:shade: :teeth:
