Not sure if they were 5000 gallon tanks but I read somewhere that they were definetly larger than normal on EL SD45-2's.

I have info regarding the larger tanks...but unfortunately, the info is not mine. I am waiting now for permission to quote from it. I will surely post it the moment I get permission!!!

Mr. Waller was on his toes this morning, I already have his reply in my inbox. So here it goes:

"The EL purchased the [SD45-2's] for fast freight service, equipping them with an extra large 5000 gallon fuel tank so the units could run without refueling between New York and Chicago. Plus the larger fuel tank added to the overall weight of the locomotives, thereby increasing their tractive effort."

This was taken from Robert Waller's Conrail Cyclopedia: http://crcyc.railfan.net

I saw information that the larger tank allowed these engines to make the New York - Chicago a round trip without refueling. Is that possible? Thanks.

Also, I see in pictures that the SD45-2 has a blue walkway surface. I thought Conrail units had black walkway surfaces, no? Thanks, again.

PS: Saturday night. You guys wake up out there!! :D

That is the rumor, that they could do the roundtrip without refueling.

As for blue walk ways, depends on the loco, some had black, others were blue

sorry i was unable to find the link, but i remember seeing on railpictures.net of a ex el, ex cr, ex csx sd45-2 belonging to the ohio central railroad sitting at the morgan run, ohio engine shops from back in 2008. it was still painted conrail and it would be a good photo to model from.
