Did you read the blurb in the latest issue of “Trains” about Union Pacific scrapping all of their SD 90s?

I remember back when all the railroads were asking GE and EMD for locomotives that could replace their existing locos on a two for one basis.

Then when the manufactures finely provided then the RRs said “Thanks but no thanks we’ll stick to 4400 hp”.

Must have seriously ticked off the good folks at GE and EMD.

Scrapping them? I had heard that they were returning them once their leases were up but i didn't know they were scrapping them. They should sell them to the smaller regonals.

The railroads did not realize at the time that anything over about 4400 HP was a strategic error. Two 6000 HP locos can be stranded if one breaks down, but three 4400 HP units can limp into town with two working. There was also the danger of rail burn if the traction control computer went on the fritz. I remember one picture where a loco melted into the rail all the way to the ties. It looked like someone was buttering corn!

That was the 6000 hp units but NOT, I believe, the SD90-43s, which continue in use...

I have a 9043 for sale, UP version. I think it has a decoder but if not I can put one in. It will probably be on the Yahoo list tomorrow so speak up if interested. I would like to trade it for an Atlas UP GP38-2 but otherwise I think I was asking $60 for it. (or $80 with Digitrax decoder)
