Hi guys and gals. Today I went on a secret mission to Brooklyn roundhouse in Portland. While there, discovered the following setup. These engines are all part of the ORHF, Oregon Rail Historical Foundation. This is low resolution, basically a video freeze frame. Better stuff next week. I have a few more of these if anyone is interested.
Nice shot Fitz. As far as I am concerned, you can post as many of those photos as you can. I live them.
Nice mission Fitz! .... Post all ya got! I'll be sure to enjoy them! Specially the AFT. Thats an interesting loco all by itself!
Oh, OK, here's another. This was quite a day. The 700 was supposed to be hot, but the volunteers did a bunch of paint touchup and dropped the fire. She will be running through Idaho and Montana next week. Doyle McCormack's RSD-5 Alco diesel was used to switch the engines around, and it was quite an operation to end up with what you see. Oh fooey, I have to go retrieve that other photo. Back later. [ 06. October 2002, 01:23: Message edited by: fitz ]
Hey hey hey! That's my gal there in the center! She's goin on a trip to Montana, (but without me, ) Anyways... now I know for sure that 4449 is still in AFT... rumor is a run to Eugene this December, but if so that's cutting it fine for getting word out. See that green two tone diesel at the top pic? Another secret project... if you can bring more pics of that, please do. Long live the SP&S!
Hey- I'm having one of those moments tonight. The old brain cells won't fire off. Fitz or Alexander- What is the heritage of that little lokie on the left? I know what it is, but somehow cannot recall..... Boxcab E50
Hey Fitz, Any chance of getting a side shot od the AFT ????? I'd like to see a good broad side shot of it. Either side is fine.... Its a beautifull loco. Sadly, all I ever seen of it were black and white pictures! And the pilot shot you poted got me setting on the edge of my seat wanting more. Like a good horror movie! HA!
Boxcab, the 197 is a high drivered Pacific, originally built for the Oregon Railway and Navigation Co. in 1905. I know little more about her, but go to this site for info. ORHF And John, here's a wedge shot of 4449 AFT backing up for a runby on the trestle at Madras, OR last March.
Fitz- Thanks for the link. Wasn't there another SP&S engine on display in the vicinity? An "O" (?) Class Mike virtually identical to the NP "W" Class? Boxcab E50
Any truth to the rumor that one of the PA4 shells went to Brooklyn for restoration? I had heard that, and when I went through Albany I didn't get a chance to check (My significant other was pissed enough as it was). And whats this about another SP&S project? Could it be an ex-LIRR FA1 . o 0 (oh please!)
Thanks Fitz! I appreciate it... Thats a good picture of the side of the AFT... As I said, all the pictures of it I ever seen were Black and white. never showing no colors! however, I have to ask, Wasn't the loco a SP "Daylight" ? It sure is a 4-8-4 by all means wit hthe SP "Daylight" look and body style! Edit: I need to learn how to type! HA! [ 06. October 2002, 13:57: Message edited by: 7600EM_1 ]
Boxcab: Yes, there was an O class Mike from SP&S which was on display as Esther Short Park in Vancouver. It's been removed for restoration but the project hasn't produced much at last word. I beleive they managed to clean her up some, vandals had got to her. I *think* she's in Longview now. cthippo: I believe the shells are at brooklyn, but I never could see them from Holgate, and there aint that much room inside the roundhouse, so unless Doyle owns the Tardis... Another SP&S project, why, yes, it is an ex LI FA... but I am under seal to say much more.... keep reading. 700EM: yes it was Daylight orange & red, it went back to AFT sometime earlier this year. It was supposed to go back to Daylight but looks like Doyle & the boys will keep her RW&B for a little longer. Robert: Nope, that's the exLI FA unit, (exBN, exSP&S). Let us say that she is currently getting some work done on her... how extensive that work is is another story... but maybe someday she won't need her RSD kissin cousin to move her about the yard, if you get my drift.
Something in the back of my mind has me thinking of a loco that was moved to Chelatchie Prairie. Could this be the Class O? Is that ex-LIRR unit originally an SP&S unit? I hope so. If it is, I'd love to see it in SP&S colors. Hope he won't paint it up in some fictional or NKP scheme. Boxcab E50 [ 06. October 2002, 18:48: Message edited by: BoxcabE50 ]
Boxcab: Chelatchie Prairie? Sounds familiar... quite possibly you are right, tho I *thought* it was the Lewis & Clark.... (*Ding-dong* hello, memory???) Hmm.... Yep, that there was an SP&S FA that BN sent to GE in trade. They converted them to head end power cars for Long Island. As for paint? You betcha, it's going back to green! The only question is, will it be broad stripe, or the early as-delivered (NP-like) scheme? They'd like to take it back to the old one but they're having a heck of a time finding a paint diagram from the era.
One PA is at Brooklyn, and it was in the roundhouse. They pulled it out just to get the 197 out yesterday, and it has six-axle trucks that look Alco. A lot of "bodywork" has been done on the front end, but most of the unit is a shell. I heard Doyle say yesterday that he has "a lifetime of work ahead" to restore the PA.
Johnnie, back in the '50's your Brooklyn was the only place to be, along with Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, Roy Campanella, Jackie Robinson, PeeWee Reese, et al. My memories of that will never die. Ebbetts Field, Flatbush Ave. Now BB players need millions to survive. These folks out here in Oregon are working their butts off to provide steam excursions for us fans. Let's help them out. Open your wallets to the ORHF, Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation. They only need the equivalent of one baseball star's average salary.
