Many of you may of not know about he 1913 flood. It covered several states and took a tremendous toll on people and things. Here is a photo from Shelbyville Indiana and the 1913 flood Big Four bridge over Blue River.
Thanks, Roger. More interesting history. I did not know about this flood or its extent. It seems the flood weakened this bridge, but the damage wasn't apparent until the bridge collapsed under the load of this train. Looks like the crew escaped unharmed - locomotive and caboose don't seem to have been involved. Lucky for them.
Looking at the brush and stream bed, I do not see obvious signs of high water? Photo appears to be in summer. Could this have collapsed for other reasons?
Thanks for posting that, Roger. I had never heard of this flood. Looks like it was a bad experience for that train crew. I see "LS & MS" on the one boxcar.
As Mike sez, the bridge was weakened in the flood. It is the result. Here is another... There are more photos on my website at http://madisonrails.railfan.net/phototraction.html. Just scroll down to the 1913 flood.
Looks like two different incidents. One has a single span down, with foliage and vegetation all leafed out as in summer. The second has two spans down, with the vegetation all barren, as if in winter.
