Hey All, My buddy Shaun and I made our annual trip up the hill to railfan the Seligman Sub. Shaun spoke to a BNSF employee we ran into while we were out and he told us that the signal bridge at Cosnino Road was one of only three remaining bridges on the entire sub and it was scheduled to be dismantled and hauled away by what is likely to be the end of this week! Anyone that wants a photo of this signal bridge should run, don't walk, to Cosnino Road to get em' while you can! BNSF equipment in place for the dismantle: Photo of the Signal Bridge: Will post a trip report shortly! Mike C Phoenix Az
Sad. I can't get up there until May, but it will be too late by then... I'll still always go to Cosnino, though! Looking forward to your report, Mike.
There are still 2 left at W. Darling left also, but they gonna be gone soon too. Already one sitting dismanteled in Downtown Flagstaff about a block E. of the Depot there. We also found another real nice spot right off of Walnut Canyon rd. just N of I-40 at the over pass
Have got the new picks of our trip posted starting on pg.4 of my railimages page. Was very sad to see the new signals sitting there waiting to be installed
Very nice pics Shaun. While I am a fan of BNSF, I hate to see old ATSF stuff go. I noticed in your pictures, you have railfanned Tolono, IL. I have been there too with my railfanning buddies!Small world. I just wish I could get out to Arizona more often.
Spend alot of time in Tolono, only bout an 1hr drive from my house, and is always good for about 25-30 trains a day Glad to hear you liked the pics, wish I could spend more time in Flagstaff myself, but can only get there once a year for my annual Spring training and railfan trip
Like I said in my other thread, I just don't see the point. Assuming it's still structurally sound, it just doesn't seem like a reasonable investment to swap out functional ironwork.
I reckon it might be that they get a quicker/easier transition with putting a new gantry up. They can 'pre-assemble' the new gantry behind whilst the old gantry is still in service, then in one short work session cut the wiring over and chop the old gantry down. To replace the heads and wiring you would have to remove the old heads and wiring before installing the new heads and wiring, so there would be no signal there whilst all that was happening.
My current favorite haunt (Rochelle to Savannah IL) on the old CB&Q has many of the old style signals, but last year I noticed that BNSF had replaced a few of them with the current design. The good news is, last I heard BNSF would not take down the three old CB&Q wooden overpasses near Chadwick IL. As sad as it is to see the familar things go away, at least they are replacing them. Still makes me sad to see those old semaphores on the B&M branch past my old house rust away
