If one examine s track diagrams of the ladder trackage at the eastern end of the Pittsburgh Station, one sees what looks like signal bridges with dwarfs mounted on them over the two sets of ladder tracks in the area. What pictures I can find are several hundred feet removed from these sets of signals bridges. does any one have any close up photos of what these signals looked like? Please post them or let me know they can be found on the web. I attach what i could find. Mike
Mike, Hello! Assuming these are standard PRR Low home (dwarf) signal heads mounted on an overhead bridge, the most detailed view of one I found is here: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/prr-dwarf-signal-union ...front, rear and inside the housing. In this spot, likely they were raised because of lack of space for ground mounting. The dwarfs were often used at intermediate circuit breaks within an interlocking, as apparently here, to allow return/reversing of direction without going completely beyond the extreme limits of the plant - most important in this application, where hundreds of passenger trains were arriving and departing every day (in the 1940s - '50s). Haven't found any photos of this specific location or use of these PL Dwarfs, as yet. Bob C.
Thanks Bob, we have gotten more information about the dwarfs and they are very different from ground dwarfs. There are apparently pictures in a book entitled "Rails to Pittsburgh."
