[TD]Ok. The headline should be more aptly named "inches matter". But that didn't [IMG] [IMG] have quite the ring to it.

Anyway, I have a 4'6" by 7 foot layout that I am building. One of my requirements is to have a run-around track capable of holding 2 50' cars. I originally had O54 switches, and O45 curves that lead into the run-around track switches. (the O54 switches were given to me and it was a shame not to use them.plus they were the only ones I had.) I did not have the room to hold 2 cars. So I switched out the O45's curves for O36s. That gave me about another 4 inches that I could use. The 2 boxcars fit but there wasn't enough clearance from the engine coming off the switch leg. I needed just a wee bit more. But then I cut 1/2 inch off the back end of each of the switches. That gave me an extra inch. Hooray! The cars fit! I added a short piece of straight track off the switch legs so the engine doesn't have any overhang. Now everything works and there is enough clearance between the cars and engines.

For those who say "why did't you just use O45 switches"? Answer: I could have used O45s but I am on a limited budget and can't buy any right now. I was too impatient to wait for the funds to come in.

Just shows what can be accomplished when you put your mind to it.

I recall doing such "adjustments" as a youth, when I had space limitations, and a miniature budget. If it does what you need, all is good!
