This thread will provide links to threads or website that have small track plan ideas. It is intended to help the new modeler or someone who wants to try something a little different. There are many, many websites that have track plan ideas as well as many threads in the TrainBoard Layout Design Forum that have specific track plans made to solve a members specific problem or criteria. You can search there for ideas or post your own request for assistance if you wish. This first link is to Mike's small layout track plans. He has everything from very small up to door size layouts. There are many variations presented.
Carl Arendt Webpage Carl Arendt has a "Small Layout Scrapbook" collection of shunting or switching layouts that are all shelf layouts and usable in any scale. These have been referred to as "timesaver" layouts and can be used for switching contests.

2' x 4' and 2' x 3' N scale layouts These links are for designs of two foot by four foot N scale layouts. Here are two foot by three foot layouts. The links state that these designs are a 2003 copyright by T. Shiel and A. Shiel. They use Atlas track, but could be adapted to all types of scales or track.
