Here are some of Johnny's pics to better illustrate what we are talking about:

#1- Here is a pic of the tide when it was just about it's highest:

#2- Approximately 2 hours later when the tide started receding.. Johnny said that at it's lowest, you can see all the old pilings from the old bridge. We didn't see them that day!

#3- This is one COLD looking shot! This is why I still prefer my 35mm to my digital!

#4- Compare this shot to the shot that I posted above of the trash train. This is the same pic taken by Johnny with his 35mm. It just looks colder to me!

A few more of Johnny's pics:

#5- An intermodal switching onto the Susy'Q's trackage. This was a great treat because they usually do not come in on these tracks. As a result, the train paused before the grade crossing for a good 10-15 minutes. At the passing of that time, a pick-up truck exited the Bergen yard and stopped beside the train. A Susy'Q employee hopped aboard the CSX train (as per FRA rules he must "pilot" the train on the Susy'Q trackage)

#6- This is my favorite pic that Johnny took. We got stuck on the wrong side of the tracks when another train came along. As a joke I said "why don't you just shoot between the cars?". He did and got a real cool pic out of it:

    #7- Florida Operation Lifesaver warning:

#8- I had to post this one. Another railfan in the way...Hey!, Wait a minute! I know that bald spot.......that's me!!!! Sorry Johnny! (I made sure that I was out of everyone's way though....I think that this was on purpose)
BTW- Notice how "prepared" we were for the weather....No hats....No gloves.....LOL

RUSS! THANKS SO MUCH! [IMG] YIPPEE!

Wow! They look great! I did take the shot of you on purpose! I thought your wife would enjoy seeing what a grand time we had out there along the high iron! I'd never call you one of those photo line &*&%(*&@^%$s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Notice how both our photos are nearly void of REAL color? All the engines were filthy, the landscape was about as dull as a rusty razor, and the sky was as lugubrious as it could have been! We loved it too!

    Thanks again my brother!

By the way, we did have hats and gloves, but jumping out to shoot the trains near the station left little time to don our gear. You have about ten seconds to react before southbounds get there. It's impossible to see when you are sitting in a vehicle, and its too cold to hang out outside. the grade crossing gates go down and you fly! Ah, we're rugged outdoorsmen anyway.

    Right......right.......AHHHHH..........AHHHHHHHH.......AHHHHHHHHHHHHH CHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!..........Russ????????? Sniffle. Drip. Wheeze.

    JT,
Sounds like the "fun Weekend" is taken its toll, now! Quote Johnny Trains
"Right......right.......AHHHHH..........AHHHHHHHH.......AHHHHHHHHHHHHH CHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!..........Russ????????? Sniffle. Drip. Wheeze." End quote.

Ummmm Sniffle, Drip, wheeze... The cold weather have you alittle under the weather ???? Sounds like Jolly ole Mr. Cold got his hands on ya! You 2 are as bad as I WAS, hence, "WAS" when I were a kid... Out playing in the cold, half dressed for the sub temperatures, and come home, day later got a cold and god knows what else from it.... I learned my lesson of doing that from being diabetic! When it hit me, It put me down like a lame horse! Tell your better half to make you some soup.... And I can just imagine her response! :D John I told you not to go out playing around the railroad tracks, in all that cold wind comming off the trains that you'd catch a cold in yer big toe! The hardest part is admitting shes right! [IMG]

A big help with me is that it always seems that I have just gotten off of the night shift when I go railfanning. I was too tired to feel anything!LOL
I think that all of the jumping around kept us nice and warm.

JP, I was only kidding about getting a cold. But it sure felt good to get home where it was warm.

I can't wait to get back there again too. It's the hottest railfanning spot around here since freight traffic such as on Long island, or at the Cross Harbor in Brooklyn, or freight traffic in the Bronx and Queens often runs at night, infrequently and is not accesible too often. Little Ferry is a great spot. It's a safe neighborhood and it's a good spot to take kids to watch trains.

You sure are correct when it comes to railfanning in NYC. It is difficult to say the least and strictly by schedule. The summer months are a little better though since daylight starts early and you can catch some of the early morning switching. The rest of the day though is pretty dead but you can always revert to railfanning the subway!
