In August, my buddy Jeff is flying out from Colorado for one of our epic train hunting trips. This time the target is Southern California. We've never covered this area so far. I know very little of the area, heck, I know more about Oregon or Arizona and I live in CA. Any suggestions on where to go and what to see would be most appreciated. I'd like to hit the Ventura County, Fillmore & Western, Santa Maria Valley, Pacific Harbor Lines, LA Junction, Carrizo Gorge, Pacific Sun, and San Diego & Imperial Valley lines. I've been doin some reasearch and have some ideas but could use some pointers. We'll also be hitting a couple of the museums such as OERM, SDRM and Travel Town but I got those down. Also I have lists for steamers and critters so that shouldn't be a problem. Just trying to nail down the shortlines listed above and any I've missed so I can set up the travel route. Thanks a ton for any tips anyone can give.
John, if it's open, the steam display at the Pomona Fairgrounds is quite impressive, Big Boy, ATSF Hudson, UP 9000, SP 4-10-2, UP Centennial and more. It is run by a chapter of the R&LHS and is not open every weekend. I think they have a website which should tell when open. :tb-biggrin:
Thanks Jim! That just happens to be the one place I have been down there. Had a demolition derby to attend just last year. Recommended to all though!
Pacific Sun only operates at night and there's no good way to get to the yard...unless you know some North County Transit people or Marines. The yard is easily seen from NB I5 and from the Pacific Surfliner/Metrolink, but not so easy to take pics of. You could see if 3751 is going to be out and about.
