There was a great request for the Conrail forum, and so far I have not seen such a great interest in folks posting to it. If we want to "survive" on TrainBoard, I would suggest that each of you interested in CR please respond to this post and tell what interests you about CR.

Well, guess my interest is that all of the CSX mainline I'm near was former Conrail property. So it is very interesting to learn about the history of the line, and obviously you have to dig into Conrail history for this. I also thing it is incredible how this railroad thrived after pulling out of the ashes of the Penn Central disaster.

    Bah chessie! [IMG]

If my counting is accurate, this forum has more posts than 20 of the other Trainboard forums. And it just started up not to long ago? Is it possible that your observation was a lil quick? [IMG]

  5. Well, I knew NYC, PRR, CI Ry and, of course PC, but it is Conrail that came from the wreckage of all of those and became a profitable railroad buying itself out of the government bailout when other roads were crying that they couldn't make it.

Conrail became a private going concern. Yes, I grieve over the loss of much of the local trackage here, the lines to Chicago and Cincy and Louiville, but much of that was set into place by PC.

I watched the railroad grow from a tattered remanent of hand-me-down power to buying the latest and greatest and running it system wide unlike the ones who took that equipment and burried it in some local run where it will never be seen here again. Now, we get second hand crap from CSX and NS and are nothing more than an afterthough to either of them.

This line outside my door used to be the main line from Cleveland to St. Louis seeing fast trains with top power. Now...

Long live Conrail, at least in my heart.

I remember back to April, 1976 when it was "Day 1" and all the neat "foreign" power would arrive in Detroit on the ex PC trains- as a dispatcher it was weird to get the power line-up of an inbound train and have 2 engines with the same number! As a railfan, I remember getting the call that such and such train had such and such power and I'd race back downtown to "shoot" LV, EL, RDG, or CNJ power each road having a wide variety of power. Many people don't know that besides those 4 lines and the L&HR and PC the Ann Arbor Railroad (my favorite) was also included in the Conrail package.

I guess I like CR in addition to Chessie, since they both live on in CSX [IMG]
When I was pushing for creation of this forum (behind the scenes) I knew it would be an interesting forum that I had a little bit of knowledge about (and a few pictures [IMG])

    Nick,
I was just trying to rattle some chains and elicit some responses. Yes, I think it already has proven itself as a viable forum (at least E-8 has not told me he was pulling the plug on us [IMG])
I am sure that there are folks out there that know a LOT more than I do about Conrail. I would like to get EVERYONE to feel comfortable about posting and sharing their information. To me, that is what makes a forum successful: a fun, informative place to visit, even if it is not your "favorite" road.

I'm certainly a Conrail fan although I model CSX. In Near by Phillipi, CSX added an industrial spur to reach a plastic plant and a lumber mill. The 2 engine were Ex-Conrail GP38-2 (still in CR paint) 5 older Conrail hopper 2 flatcars in PC and Reading, and a CSX caboose, They said they only used what was available in Grafton (yea ,right) [IMG] [IMG]

I just now stumbled upon this site. As a former CR conductor out of Toledo OH who located to the north (really north)I like any connections to the Big Blue. The area of particular interest to me is the NYC/CR Chicago Line in particular from Cleveland onto Toledo and ending in Chicago. I look forward to checking this area and talking with some of you. Thanks!!!

Its a shame to see "big blue" gone. I was a teen when it was formed up and remember the first "blue" locomotive running on the Penn Central main in Indiana. But then again its also a shame we cant catvh the EL, PC either.I wish I took better pictures then!!!!!!!!!!!

    HI MAIL8,
And welcome to the Conrail forum. I am glad you stumbled upon us! We are just hangin' out, have fun, and trying to talk about the "former" Big Blue [IMG] You comments are welcomed and appreciated.
I enjoyed the early days of Conrail too, as nickleplate pointed out. It was a very interesting time with different loco consists and freight car paint schemes. It reminds me of what I saw in the early CSX days here down South; rag tag paint schemes and a lot of paint-patching going on. That is what made it interesting... if a train was coming, you never really knew what locos (paint, or condition) to expect.

You betcha and then finally when they did get all of them locomotives in the nice shade of blue then the run-throughs started. A trainwatcher could always count on any colors going through on that CR Chicago Line. At least twice a day you could always count on the latest new locos coming from the GE plant at Erie PA comin through going west and lots of UP or BN,ATSF, Rio Grande stuff. But the BLUE always will rule even if their is some NS black spliced in with it.....Later Mail 8
