This unit is my recently completed FURX SD40-2. As far as I know, all the details are correct (including antennas and horns). Here is my recently completed C44 with WINGS!! Weathered, and ready for coal train DPU in. Back shot of same unit. This unit is going to be a DPU for my coal train (it will be pushing nose first...that is why the back is so detailed). Here is a shot of a SF B23-7 I just got a few weeks ago. Back shot of grabs on same unit. Please let me know what you guys thinks. Any suggestions? Thanks! Craig Way cool......8=) What paint did you use for the "silver" on the FURX unit? Looks very realistic. See the two-page photo gallery of FURX 3027 starting at this URL: === http://www.trainweb.org/fcen-rr/furx1.html === For anyone else wanting to do this model, see the decal sheet offered by Highball Graphics at this URL: === http://www.mgdecals.com/LN-131.htm === Your attention to detail is phenomenal. Keep up the fantastic work ! Regards.......8=) Don B [ 29 April 2001: Message edited by: dbn160 ]
Everything looks awesome, Craig! You asked for suggestions....OK....STOP! You keep making me want to throw my models away! I would offer one suggestion of applying a black wash to the grills, especially on the UP unit. This adds great depth and realism. It seems to me that grills are the first thing to weather on any prototypical unit. I do this to just about everything except those models that already have this effect because of the paint application, like the H1 Kato C44-9W's. Here's that Bachmann 8-40CW I did that shows this effect fairly well. Russ [ 29 April 2001: Message edited by: tehachapifan ]
Craig, looks great, pretty much right on, except the carbody is incorrect for the number, but who's getting that picky . Also, as-delivered, the middle journal (end of the axle) on each truck was painted yellow. See this pic, but most have weathered away. http://members.fortunecity.com/harron/alstom/furx/3018.html For numerous pictures of the FURX/GCFX/CEFX series, check out this page. http://members.fortunecity.com/harron/alstom/alstom.html [ 29 April 2001: Message edited by: Harron ]
Craig, What size wire are you using for your grabs, they look a little thick, I use .009 or even better, .008 guitar string.
Excellent job Craig ! You have got to get some shots of those locos in some magazines, they're too good to just be shown here! Mike Antkowiak
Guitar strings for grabs!I was pondering this subject myself.Hard to believe those models are n scale.I am inspired to detail my engines.Close enough is no longer good enough.Craig, you have taken n scale to a new level!
Wow, thanks for all the great input guys! The paint is ALL Accu Paint (not Accu Flex). I did weather the rear intakes on the -9 but for some reason it doesn't show in the photo. I might try some thinned india ink for that. (I did notice on your -8 before and that looks PERFECT....gotta do that to all my stuff now). The grabs are .010" wire made by Creative Model Associates. It is very nice wire. Any way, again, thanks for the input guys, I'll have more done soon.
I forgot to add in the last post that these are my next projects (as time permits). GP40X Southern Pacific SD70M Southern Pacific SD90MAC w/Phase II cab (waiting till the SD90 comes out). GP9 SF/BNSF style, low nose and angular cab. F45 (this one is almost done) Santa Fe Should be fun!!!
Definately looking forward to that F-unit Craig. Keep up the good work! Russ/NYC The Hoffman Valley Railroad NARA member 28
