Scanned a few Pacifics today. Some elude me, looking at Staufer's books and George Drury's, there are a couple here the numbers of which don't appear on any lists. Can you help? 4384, Unknown K type. Small tender might mean Michigan Central? 6519, another unknown K type. 6000 series Big Four? 6406, Kb through Kn, Big Four
Jim, 4384 is probably a Harlem Division K-14 taken at the North White Plains, NY engine terminal. The background looks like the Ready Track where 4384 is waiting to take over from a GCT electric motor. The closest numbers I could find are 4383, 4385, and 4389, all photos of K-14s contained in Louis Grogan's book, The Coming Of The New York And Harlem Railroad. 6519 appears to be a K-14, though it definitely is not on the Harlem. The Harlem did not have semaphores, only searchlights. Ken, I want to think "Lines" was dropped in the late 30's, or during WW-II. IIRC, all the pre-war Lionel tenders had "Lines".
Hank, you found 4383, 85 and 89? Drury doesn't show any of those numbers on the roster, so 4384 is undoubtedly a K-14 as you said. Thanks. Ken, I don't know for sure, but suspect "Lines" was dropped at the massive re-numbering that took place in 1936, though I'm sure some continued to carry "Lines" until their next trip to the roundhouse.
Jim and Ken, I think you both would enjoy Grogan's book. I features a comprehensive photo travelogue from GCT up the Harlem to Chatham. Plus secondary routes from Chatham to North Adams, MA (on which I traveled at least twice), the Putnam Division, a bunch of short commuter and freight branches throughout the Bronx, and some original branches that "died" in the 20's like one from Chatham to Hudson, NY. Amazon currently has a new copy for $60, which is less than I paid shortly after it was first released in 1989.
