Here are some photos of some steam locomotives I have either ridden behind or chased. This group is from the 1987 NRHS Convention in Roanoke.

The next set are from what I consider the greatest day railfanning I have had. Norfolk Southern shut down their line and played with their steamers. The A was pulling 50 coal hoppers and the J was pulling 19 cars.

And finally here are the two locomotives retiring for the evening. They traveled side by side from Roanoke to Radford, VA, and double headed back to Roanoke.

Tom, my favorite subjects, steam engines. N&W did it right with those two in particular. I was lucky enough to catch the J once, but never saw the A run. We have forums on the fallen flags, including NS predecessors. Please post some more steam photos! Very nice. :D [IMG]

Excellent!!! I particularly like the going-away shot of the A and the J. I am not a big fan of the J, as I think we did streamlining better in the UK, but it is an awesome machine, and it is sad they decided to pull the plug on running steam.

I would have loved to see a big articulated in full stride, we had nothing than came close to them in size, or spectacle.

Please keep posting steam pics. We all love 'em [IMG]
