The roundhouse at South Anderson had 16 stalls in 1950. After the coming of the diesel, it was cut to the 8 stalls shown here. In time, it was all torn down. To the right of the roundhouse where the telephone pole stands was the engine crew dispatcher building. Maurice Lewman collection.
Roundhouses were so much a part of steam operations, and now most are gone. Like so many, the S. Anderson one was cut down in size after diesels came along. I feel fortunate to have seen and worked in the Brooklyn roundhouse here in Oregon, for it too will soon be torn down. It still houses steam, SP 4449, SP&S 700, ORN 197. Jerry Jacobsen, on the other hand, has just built a new one in Ohio to house his collection of steam locomotives. I hope to be able to visit his 'house' some day. :tb-biggrin: Thanks, Roger, for another historical NYCS photo. Thank you LEW.
This is a short photo of what it looked like in better years in 1954. My full length photo doesn't show as well.
Roger, I love your "time machine" that takes us back to such better times. That looks like a Mohawk tender in the full length photo. :tb-biggrin:
