It's 1951, summer and #11 (Southwestern Limited) is headed west to Mattoon, and is still showing an Observation as it crosses Main Street in Paris Illinois.

Wonderful photo, Roger, and a lovely memory of how great the Great Steel Fleet really was. :tb-cool:

One of the Budd "lookout lounge" observation cars.
The Southwestern was the equal of the 20th Century Limited.
Thanks for the great picture, Roger.

Yeah, the Central didn't have only the Sandy Creek and the Hickory Creek, there were quite a few beautiful observation cars. I don't know how many, do any of you? Thanks for another great photo, Roger. :tb-biggrin:

There were only the two smoothside observations with tall windows. There were three River-series Pullman smoothsides and four Island-series Pullman smoothsides.

Budd built three observations with the tall windows in 1949, mainly for the Southwestern Limited and backup for the 20th Century Limited. I don't know where else they might have been used.

Budd had also supplied 21 other observations in 1948-1949 plus the two originally built for the 1941 Empire State Express.
