I came across this website and thought you might appreciate a look see.

SP Economy Baggage Cars REA Reefers

Of special note to me is the REA Express Cars. Former Troop Train Cars built by Pullman. Maybe we can talk Micro-Trains into producing some REA cars out of their troop cars.

One other point of interest is the SP, light weight, painted SP gray, boxy baggage car. Does Walthers Fantasy SP baggage car come to mind?

Aw, heck! I went out and bought one anyway. Looks good in my mail train.

Then I read that SP painted a bunch of their head end equipment SP Gray, shortly before they turned everything over to Amtrak. I'm not sure that is correct, in the sense they waited until then to paint them. I don't believe they ever ran the boxy types, with the two windows in one door and one window in the other door, in any other color but SP Gray. Other then noted. I believe they got painted SP Gray when the cars were shopped.

I do remember seeing these baggage cars years before Amtrak entered the picture. They ran these on the coast route in the early morning fast mail and the afternoon "Milk Run". A train that stopped at all the stations to pick-up and deliver mail. They could also be seen in consist, during the later years of the Daylight's.

Mail trains? Talk about a mixed bag of equipment and never mind what they did to the passenger trains. :pbaffled:

    Enjoy!

    Thanks for the link.
I've also got a couple of Walther's baggage cars in SP. Close enough for me, considering the chances of anyone ever doing more accurate ones is probably less that the chances of someone doing SP's 3/4 domes.

Glad you liked the posting. You are more then welcome.

Yep, with regard to the Walther's SP Baggage car...I'd of ordered more but they were out of stock. A bit pricey!

Diverting from SP. As for Santa Fe, I've yet to see a baggage car that resembled Walthers, with the four slatted windows. Afraid, it would look odd to these eyes.

    Still tempted!

A trip over to Bob Morris's website reveals some interesting mixes. Check out the locomotives in this mail train #19 or #20. Then look back at the mail storage baggage cars. KLAMATH
Then click on the return to "Klamath" for more interesting photos.

Here again is SP's mail train, either #19 or #20 looking at it from the rear. KLAMATH

From Bob Morris's photo files. Check out Jack Whitmeyers collection. Most of his photos are taken in or around Colton, CA. SP Mail Train #57 http://www.snowcrest.net/photobob/spha11.jpg I believe this is looking in the direction where the freeway interchange is today.

Very cool, Rick. I bought a warbaby GS-4 In HO years ago in hopes of one day have it pull a fastmail. Some day..... :)

Those REA cars look close to the Athearn 50' reefers cars, but with Express Trucks. Wonder if that's kibash fodder there....hmmmm.

FYI--Model Railroad Warehouse (Model RailRoad Warehouse -- Manufacturer and Distributor) has some brass sides for troop sleeper conversions, although the site is exceedingly difficult to navigate and it's not entirely clear what they still have in stock. We're also having a conversation about the converted troop sleepers and future sides over on the N Scale Varnish Yahoo Group.

M&R sides (imported by N Scale Supply) makes the Santa Fe baggage sides and doors.
