Maybe this should go under "Fallen Flags", but I thought that since both the Southern Pacific and the Rio Grande ended up as part of the Union Pacific, some folks here might know: Was there an area the Southern Pacific and Rio Grande overlapped or interchanged? A casual study of route maps makes it look like Northern Nevada might be my best bet, but I thought I'd double check. My dad modeled both those roads, and I have a bunch of early- to mid-1960s equipment for them; and I wondered if there was precedent for having them on the same layout, or whether that was just artistic license. Thanks, Dave
Ogden, UT. SP took off west out of there across the Salt Lake, literally, and I think they had a line going north out of ogden too. The D&RGW went south out of Ogden to Provo and then gradually turned eastward going to Denver.
I cannot add much to that. In the later days, with trackage rights gained by the UP/MP merger in 1983-ish, D&RGW gained access to Kansas City, MO. There may have been a Cotton Belt/SP interchange there, too.
I should have known. I was just in Ogden for the first time this past weekend. I kept remarking how much it reminded me of my dad's old HO layout. That may very well be why. It makes me wonder if he'd ever visited there, or had just been working from photos. Thanks!! -Dave
