Track planning can get downright stifling. For where I left off in 2023. https://www.trainboard.com/highball/index.php?threads/sp-in-the-ie-progress-2023.153804/ Here is a very rough idea of what I am working toward on my garage layout. This is the lower level that includes Old Colton, Loma Linda, and a part of San Timoteo. I do not like that Old Colton is on a curve, but it's broad so it may be ok. I hope I can include a staging area for an ATSF yard transfer sourced from the diamond area. This would go a long way to adding traffic to the modeled road. I do need to add a crossover so the ATSF can have direct access to the yard. I am still tossing ideas around on that one. Anyway, I just wanted to give a bit of an update.
I know what you mean, and I'm just doing a Unitrack folded dogbone on a 36x80 HCD! At some point, I'm gonna have to declare planning 'done', and start building it. I had it mocked up with viaducts for the trackage that will be on elevated terrain, but it all had to be disassembled when we moved.
This may be a duplicate post on another thread but I want to keep this updated. Making space for the rest of the benchwork became my priority. I put my large workbench on wheels thinking I could roll it under the layout when not in use, but I decided to park it on the tool wall. I had to discard and reorganize some items in order to remove a tall brown cabinet and dresser. I added a bunch of shallow totes and some deep totes on wheels for easy movement. The space is now ready for construction. The plan on the left shows the lower level with some of San Timoteo. The plan on the right only shows the ten track staging on the upper level. Beaumont will likely end up above Loma Linda with Banning around the other side of the blob. Then a very arid desert run into the Indio side of staging. I'm getting closer to making model railroading fun.
