    Hey all,

I was wondering, above or below the road number some units have TE and like designations, I was wondering what these mean? I know there are others besides just TE, can someone please explain them?

Thanks in advance for any help!

What engines and/or era? A lot of SP/SSW units in the 80s and 90s had their maintenence "bases" stencilled on the airbrake compartment door under the cab in 3" lettering. EL PASO, LOS ANGELES, PINE BLUFF, ROSEVILLE, etc. for where that unit was assigned to for maintenance. Right before that, they usually just had the initials of the home shop stencilled on the corner of the cab; "RV" for Roseville, "EP" for El Paso, etc. Some of the other lettering, like "TE", stood for (IIRC) "Telemmetry Equipped", meaning it was equipped with the radios and antennas to handle End of Train Devices.

Thanks, SP 8299, I'm modeling the 1990's and currently working on SP 7200 and noticed the TE below the cab window and was wondering what it meant?

I know what RV, EP, etc means, but what about the far smaller lettering on the doors below the cab, would list like Eugene and then a date and other numbers?

Thanks and any help is greatly appreciated! :)

No problem. In regards to the other teeny-tiny lettering sometimes under the home shop name, that was shop data listing maintenance done to the unit. They would typically have the shop, such as "LA", then a maintenance code denoting what kind of work was done ("M12", "M03", etc.), and the date the work was done. Offhand, I don't know what all of the maintenance codes stood for, although IIRC, "M99" signified a full rebuild (GRIP program). I do know an SP expert that might know, so I'll drop him an email to try to get the full scoop.

Thank you so much, I've been wondering about that for years! Yes, please send your friend a e-mail asking about that, I'd love to know more.

    Thanks again! :)
