There were still a good number of agencies open in the mid-1960's. After WWII, the railroads began slowly closing offices, as the traffic levels in many cases dropped. Wide spread use of radios came in, more CTC was installed. Jobs were dualized or moved to one central depot. That 1965 ETT I mentioned last night would be a good reference.
That sounds like a fun project. Maybe a small one like the one I posted, could be a good first project. Its similar to some I saw on the Columbia between Vancouver and Wishram. If I remember the St Helens depot looks like it. Ex B&B dept... Burlington Northern..late 1970's in Oregon and Washington. Dad was with SP&S/ GN/BN 1962-2004 Portland/vancouver (OE)
#142 of April 25, 1965. Skipping the joint facilities of larger terminals such as Spokane, Tri-Cities, Portland. The following are shown open. No particular order here....: Camas Stevenson Bingen-White Salmon Lyle Wishram Roosevelt Plymouth Finley Snake River Washtucna Lamont Scribner Klickitat Goldendale Bend Redmond Prineville Junction Metolius Madras South Junction Maupin Dike Willbridge Linnton United Junction St. Helens Clatskanie Astoria Seaside North Plains Salem Albany Yard Junction City Eugene Lebanon Weldwood Sweet home Hillsboro Forest Junction Note: Some of these were just train order offices. Others did actual agency work. Also, these exact same locations were open in 1961. Going back to 1948, about 15 to 18 more were open. So it can be seen they shrank, and then hit a status quo. I believe almost all of those open in 1965, made it to March 2nd, 1970. Thereafter, BN quickly closed some.
Thank you for sharing OT, I think the 16' x 60 depot would be a good one to build. hmmmmm, I'm gonna ask for scratchbuilding tips in the N scale forums and make a list on paper of what I'll need and what I'll have to do.
Gotta have a privy!! They were in every yard. Im gonna build a two story for the Wishram yard. Upper for labor..lower for management...LOL. Sad truth is works out the other way.....
750, Have you looked at the NP historical society web site. They offer a couple very nice small depot kits that might work for you. Bruce Barney (SPS society pres.) has a beautiful laser kit of Maupin. Its a larger depot, but can be cut down to work. Most depots were similar, but varied per site. Scratch building is the way most of us go to get the correct prototype structures. It is my favorite aspect of the hobby. I started with wood and made the switch to styrene years ago. Window castings can be altered to fit also by chopping a glueing. I built the Wishram depot and Beanery over 15 years ago and still looking good. Lasted three different layouts and waiting to be placed on the current version. Good luck with your scratch build, Rick
wow....I will have to visit thier table this weekend at Portland.....I need a depot at Maupin on my layout. I have been looking for a clear picture of the old depot there, to scratch build from one of the plans I have. I have the Wishram and lunchroom on my layout, from kits from SBQ models, also.
ick I should have made this more clear, The Maupin kit is N scale. Not sure if available in HO, but worth checking out. Rick
I checked at the NP historical society table....Only in N scale. Hobby smith in Portland has 3 of the Atlas RS-3's #81 & #84. Checked at Whislestop and I got the last one. If anyone is looking for them
Yes, this was NPs access into Portland via the ferry "Tacoma" at Goble before the Columbia RR bridge was built. The NP society has a Goble kit available. Rick
