I was wondering if any manufacturer makes a suitable color for painting Sperry Rail Service Cars. The yellow color for the modern scheme is what I am interested in. If noone makes a color, what would be a good place to start a custom mix.

I think that I would just use a reefer yellow and be done with it.

I should point out that Drew is painting my doodlebug for me, so you may have noticed my question in the N Scale forum on this same topic.

Every reference I could find for SRS talked about "School Bus Yellow." I went to the "prototype" Collins Bus Specifications and found that they paint their busses "Chrome Yellow."

In doing some research, the military and government vendors (like school
bus makers), use Federal Standard (FS) numbers to spec paints. Here is a link to the FS paint charts.

My guess is that Chrome Yellow busses are FS:33538 Chrome Yellow. According to the
FS coding, Testors Model Master Chrome Yellow is the right color, but high gloss. The gloss is better for decaling anyway and dullcoat will take care of the shine.

I couldn't find any N scale decals for the proiject, but I ordered Champs HO decals and found that some of the smaller door emblems in HO scale will work for the side panel emblems in N scale.

Just finished painting my Nscale Santa Fe doodlebug in chrome yellow. It doesn't look a darn thing like a Sperry car,but damn what a difference that yellow makes.Since my freelance railroad is expanding into rail repair services this little besauty will be lettered GVRS [IMG]

So Catt, since you're freelancing this one, did you do a silver roof too? What about a black stripe? Mine isn't done yet, but I'm pleased with how it looks so far...

I remember riding the Doodlebugs with my Grandmother back in the 30's. The black and white tiger stripes on the front looked scarey when I saw one coming at me!
