1. Well, how about NYC station stops. Here's one with a picture.

NYC Southwestern Limited the premier passenger train on the New York-St. Louis run, seen eastbound in Anderson Indiana between 1931 and 1936 led by Big Four J1d Hudson number 6609. Next stop, Muncie. - Francis H. Parker Collection. Used with Permission

BTW - The station it was stopped at is still in existance. :)

PS - I only use small pix to keep the larger quality photos from being lifted and showing up somewhere I never intended them to be.

  4. Same location as above in 1955. Look at the baggage and baggage handler waiting for the eastbound train.

Sure does me some good to see the good old days! Thanks Roger! How do you keep your photos so small. I cut the pixels down to 600 and they are still big when you bring them up. I scan them and they show 1725 at 100%. If I cut them to 50% they still come up filling the page. If I go to 475 pixels, they get blured. I have one I have been wanting to post, but it is in a book, so is copywrited I'm sure, but no way to get permission to post it. Another one is the same way and that book is even older, its 1919. Gripe gripe gripe.

  6. 1919? I think that you're safe. Just give credit to the source.

I generally resample a 16 million color scan to around 600xXXX. Note that I said resample and not resize, the process does different things to a picture. Next I sharpen the photo to bring back the clarity, then I resample again to about 300xXXX or so. If necessary, I will sharpen that photo before I save it.

I may have stepped through 3 or 4 levels to get the final product. I will no longer post the original size of my photos as I have had several lifted without my Copyright information. I would never post a really good scan of someone else's photo even if I have permission to use it. Now, I only do small pix and generally JPG. They may look decent, but you can't blow them back up to original size without them turning to crap. :)

Roger, does that scene ever trigger memories. My dad worked for the Railway Express Agency on the Central for 37 years, and I have witnessed that scene, different station, many times in my childhood. Look at the stuff they loaded and unloaded from all those Central trains, long before UPS, FedEx et al.

Railway Express gave up saying that there just wasn't a need for package delivery any more. That was just about the time that UPS was getting a start. Ironic isn't it, how much of UPS' packages now move by rail as TOFC freight.

In any event, the Railway Express Agency was located across the tracks to the south and diagonally across Main Street on the east of the Big 4 (NYC) station. And numerous other commercial businesses including plumbing supply houses and lumberyards were all located nearby. All of this produced heavy street and rail traffic throughout the area of the station with passengers, merchants and trains coming and going.

This is in contrast to today where the area is still industrialized to a degree. However, all of the trackage except the main is gone and it was only about 3 years ago that the old REA building was torn down and replaced by a parking lot and loading docks for a warehouse.
