There are going to be a lot of steam engines in HO scale coming out from now until April. My guess its the largest release of new steam engines in plastic ever. The list includes the following:
    Bachmann Spectrum;
    0-6-0t saddle tank
    2-10-0 Russian
    4-8-4 N&W J (much more accurate)
I have heard a brand new K4 but would like confirmation
    Rivarossi
    2-6-6-6 C&O Allegheny
    Trix/Marklin
4-8-8-4 UP Big Boy (not plastic, but still new)
    Life-Like
    0-6-0 USRA
2-8-8-2 Y3 with new tender (Kind of new)
If you are a steam fan, it is time to make sure there is enough $ in the account.

it'll be a long while before I chase down an Allegheny (to go with my Big Boy, Mallet and Challenger). Whew!!!

You can pre-order the Allegheny for around $350 at a lot of places. I have never paid "suggested retail price" for any engine.

    Guys,
HE HE HE I beat you all on the actual recieving of an Allegheny! I got one right now! In my poscession and its mine! Only thing. Its NOT Rivarossi.... I got an older version that was made by Arbour some years ago.... It runs like a million and is painted... I have to put cab numbers on it tho for C&O but other then the fact it doesn't have all the detail the Rivarossi does I can't complain at an average of $85!!!! It pulls with my new Rivarossi loco's tho! Thats all I wanted! :D

Anyway its like a Bowser made one just better craftmanship... I like it and for the price for an Alleghney??? Well.. You all know that therory! HA! :D

I bought it in a collection I entirely bought out so... I got a few decent older articulated steamers.. a 2-6-6-2 Mantua, another Riv 2-8-8-2 Y6b like I need a hole in my head I got 5 Y6b's now! and another Challenger that needs to be constructed that was disassembled years ago and never put put back together. Hopefully all the parts are their! And like 3 each of the following 2-8-4's, and 2-8-2's, and 4-6-2's.. I really uped my train collection to even greater extents for all total with a box of rolling stock that was orginally for shipping a refrigerator! So I got my moneys worth! $1,000 for all.. I took it all and put it on a credit card for now.. Payments and all, i'd never be able to fork out a grand all at once so... :D

I always wondered about the Arbour Allegheny. Arbour also made a Pennsy J1 2-10-4. It is probably one of the worst locomotive kits ever. I don't know of any that have ever been completed. I am not a big fan of the older plastic engine or the Bowser engines. They just seem to lack the detail, but they do pull.

    Eric,
My Allegheny runs great and all and someone else had built it! But in its detail I can't say it lacks alot though! Its got all the seperate lines and pipes real close to brass quallity detail... I'm not real sure if the guy I bought it from did all the work or if he may have paid someone to do it or what. It was in his collection when I bought the entire loco & rolling stock collection he had at the time and all so.... It does however have a bunch of old lost wax brass castings on it! Some of which I hope never to be lost or get brittle being they are some really old no longer made details!

On my Allegheny, I will say its not completely plastic! The bottom portion of the boiler is cast, and all the frame work for the engine frames. The only plastic is the boiler top and the tender body! The rest is cast. The wheels are brass on steel insulated axle's and so on! No plastic spokes and the side rods seem to be stamped nickle or some type metal I didn't go around on it and scratch here or their to ruin its finish... I will say its a heavy little thing tho! I bet it weights like 2 pounds or better so.. And it has 2 open frame motors in it that I may end up later changing. I want 2 good can motors in it so.... I never had any luck with the open frame motors so... 2 Mantua style Sagami can motors should do the trick!

I kinda wish I had the orginal box and instructions to it to see whats factory and whats not.... That sure would be interesting...

I forgot to add, I heard there is going to be a new and Improved 4-8-8-4 Big Boy from Rivarossi in the Spring also.
SO Marklin might get a little compatition from these.
I wouldn't pay retail on these either, never have yet, the price of the Marklin Big Boy, I would build a motor for my Nova first.
