That's one massive looking firebox. What are those panels below it outside of the rear driver? extra support for the rear end?
Sorry to say I have no idea; but, as you will see as I post more not every engine of this class has them. If I come across anything about those I will include it here. Maybe some of the other Steam Era fans might help with this question too.
#999 is very different from the other ones pictured. It has a "normal" firebox for instance. Was this an earlier or later version, I wonder? (999 also is a much nicer looking engine to my eyes)
Yes, #999 listing. The E-3a class went through a major rebuild and thus they are listed twice with the exception of one. The below is from my most specail D&H book from Jim Shaughnessy (Delaware & Hudson) which he signed for me and gave me access to some of his photographs which was fantastic. Built 1911, scrapped December 1947.
