Darren, if they are the same class, why are there differences - domes, bell and headlight, for instance? I like the high mounted light and bell on the 446
I will see what more I can dig up on this class as it truly has many "differences" that I don't understand either. From: http://www.bridge-line.org/blhs/dhsteamroster.html Road Numbers: 442 - 457 Type: 4-4-0 Built: 1903 -1904 Builder: Alco Now to confuse this issue more: #443 @ Fort Edward, NY
I would guess that some differences were general upgrades over many years. Perhaps a few were experiments. Perhaps one or two were accident repairs? But evolution to camelback certainly is a leap! Boxcab E50
and the D&H was good at doing rebuilds and I can see how they might have done these. This is why I built the DHVM so I can capture these old historical photos, etc. before they are lost to time. The trouble is many/all of those from that time that knew the details of what we are seeing are long since gone to share their knowledge of what really happened. I'm hoping in one of my books it might talk about this or see if any of my D&H friends in anotehr forum know the history.
I found references to there rebuilds from being a Double Cab to Single Cabs. Various dates but basically in the late 1920's.
