Welcome to Trainboard, Paul Good to have another Brit on board! Here is a picture of a straddle loader I took in San Bernardino in Feb. 1998 http://www.trainweb.org/alansamericangallery/3718.html [This message has been edited by Alan (edited 30 November 2000).]

quote:
Originally posted by Paul Templar: Can anyone help me as to what a straddle loader looks like, any body got a good photo of one please. I model in HO and logging but live in the UK

Thanks for the photo Alan, but thats not the one I was looking for. The one I am after is rather small and sits across the tracks loading logs onto log cars ------------------
Oh, sorry Paul, haven't seen one of those. The only log loaders I have seen (on videotapes, etc.) is a grab type at the side of the tracks. I will be surprised if someone does not know ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.alancurtismodels.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery
Hey! Have a look at Paul's model railroad Superb pictures, description, how-to pages, etc. http://www.badger-creek.co.uk/ ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.alancurtismodels.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery
Paul, I can think of two possibilities at this moment. Walthers offered one as part of their Trees and Trains series, and Con-Cor also offers one. The Con-Cor version looks a bit spindly, but that just accentuates its character. Typing when you're trying to feed a bottle to a three-month-old is not easy! ------------------ Wishin' I wasn't so far from the railroad...
There were some pulled by horses that had large wheels 8 to 10 feet in diameter, that straddled logs for hauling, that were patterned after the ones used in Europe to haul stone and statues. Later there were straddlers mabe like an up side down letter "U" with wheels, and some with Caterpillar tracks that were pulled by Caterpillar crawler tractors. Now they have self propelled log and lumber haulers that are more like tractors on stilts with 4 wheel stearing and drive. There is also a stationary type straddle Crane usually standing over a railroad siding or two with a roadway parallel to the tracks. Some extend out over a waterway for loading and unloading boats from trucks and flat cars. ------------------ Watash #982
I would love to help, but there's not much in the way of logging and railroads in Colorado today so i've never seen what you're looking for...
