Tony, I've found most track these days have ties that are pretty resilient to crazing. I guess I can't see that cleaning track or, in this case, cleaning adhesive off track, is going to expose the plastic to any harm. Stripping paint is another matter. I try not to have to do that!
Is it other than an honor to have a SM number??:embarassed: :teeth: I agree with Fifer--what instructions?!?
Well I checked the can and there were warnings galore but nothing specific about removing adhevise from wood or metal surfaces, nothing. Pleny of detail about eye, skin contact, and a number to call, but after 20 minutes in auto attenedant hell I decided to move on. So I tried the lacquer thinner and that seem to work fine after cleaning the tracks twice slowly and diligently. Getting the pair of loco's that did the initial sticky laps and contiued testing cleaned was another story. I'd clean the wheels with 91% alcohol and the axles would be clean for a few laps and then get dirty. They would develop a smoky coating on the wheels. After cleaning on them the smoky coating would be removed to reveal black gunk underneath. The haze and gunk would come off after some rubbing. Then 2 more laps and cleaning was required due to erratic loco movement. In all it took about 10 laps, 5 cleanings for each test loco. I'm happy to report that this near fiasco has reached a happy conclusion. I'd like to thank everyone for your ideas and support!!
A tip to clean loco wheels: cheapo power pack, short length of track 5" long or longer, alligator clip leads, a piece of thin cloth or paper towel, and 91% alky. Affixing the track to a board works best, but not necessary. wet the cloth, place it on a couple inches of track, rail the loco on it, one truck on the clean rail, and turn the power up. Hold the loco to keep it from taking the Nestea plunge, and repeat as necessary, till both trucks are clean.
Thanks Pete!! How do I edit a thread title, I've edit posts before. Thanks for the honor of number 60. I hope this my only one but I doubt that will last. My layout is about half complete so theres room for more mistatkes!!
Dave, I'm not sure with the new software. You started the thread, and should be able to edit the title. I just can't find the correct buttom. I'll ask in the staff forum. At last resort I can change it for you. But let me ask first.
Dave, Bring up the first post and then Click on the "Thread Tools" square gray button. There should be a radio button on "Edit Thread." If you click that, you should be able to edit the thread title. My problem is that I'm a moderator, so I have access to Edit Thread on all posts here. I'm not sure what a member has access to. Try it: if it doesn't work, tell me what you want it to read, and I'll change it. Sorry if I'm looking mystified. We do sort through these issues one at a time. And thanks for bringing it to our attention.
After clicking on the threads tools I did not see edit thread as an option. Pete you can make it stupid mistake #60
