My Koolpix 2000 took an electrical shock, (as near as I can tell). It will not shutter.

Any suggestions for digital cameras under $250?
    Thanks

What is your intended use? Modeling, railfanning, general photography?

I have a very nice Olympus C5050 in the yellow forum right now. It's a little higher on the price, $300. But I thought you might still be intrested.

I suggest you consider $350 as the limit--the Sony, Nikon, and other cameras at that range are superb, and you can often get them at $275 street price.

The sony dsc100 is 5mp and is usually under $250.00usd. The dsc200 is above 300.00usd but has 7mp! I have seen pictures and had an chance to play with camera, it has a nice lcd screen and easy menu. [IMG]

Must have features (not in any particular order, and I'll explain later)..

storage type: what kind of media or storage card does it use?? Compact flash is the cheapest and has the largest capabilities, however, if you have a Sony video camera or other items that use Memory Stick, that might sway your decision if you own vast amounts of media

Optical zoom: probably a 3x OPTICAL zoom is a minimum... digital zooms not that useful and are basically like making a bad copy of a poor fax

Battery source: Lithium Ion rechargables are extremely long lasting and almost infinately rechargable; however some digital cameras take AA batteries and you can add your own, cheap rechargable source.

A big thing to consider is how a camera feels in your hands and how intuitive the controls are. For me, I have used Canon film and digital cameras for the last 20 years. Guess what? Most of the programmed modes work the same way, with an easy turn knob! Try it before you buy it... you could end up with an awkward 5 pound moster that you don't enjoy using. :(

    Steve:

You can pick up a nice Nikon Coolpix in the $300 range.

Many times Nikon has a factory rebate on a camera.

    Stay cool and run steam....

I have a Canon A75 and love it. It was $249 6 months ago when new, you can get much higher megapixel versions of this camera (A95)now for the same amount.

I personally own a Canon A95, I absolutely love it everyone of my pics on railimages were taken with it, can be had for right $300, and has multiple accs. that you can also buy for it . Runs off of 4 AA batts. I use good rechargeables in it , and can use it all day, to the tune of over 100 pics on a charge. It uses the CompactFlash cards and will store over 200 pics on a 256mb card at the highest res.
Can be used in full auto or Man. also has a continous shutter that can allow you to take a pic + per second
If you are willing to spend the extra $50 this is a great camera.

I have the Olympus Camedia C-765 Ultra Zoom - 10x zoom is cool. On sale at Best Buy for 299.99 (www.bestbuy.com). I've had this one for 7 months - works well - even bought one for my mother-in-law! This is my 3rd Olympus digital - all my older models have been around for years and still work just fine.

I and Jeanne have been disappointed with the battery capacity of the Sony Cybershot DSC-WS1. A comparable Casio seems much better in that regard, as well as taking better images.

I hesitated to buy the Olympus C-765 because it has a lithium-ion rechargeable battery - I have many AA nickle metal hydrides for my other cameras - but the Li-ion battery goes a long way. Every once in a while I pop it into the charger, and in less than an hour I have a full charge. Very happy so far. [IMG]

I have had mine a year to replace my old D450Z. 10X zoom is real nice, so is the Super Macro function that lets you be in focus less than 1/2" away from the subject. Perfect for modelers, Olympus C-765. :D

The Lithium Ion in my new Canon Digital Rebel XT is phenonominal.... I can take well over 700 shots outside (no flash) at large resolution, at up to 3 frames per second, before getting a "warning" that the battery is in need of recharging. It came with a quick charge AC recharger that brings it back to 100% capacity in about an hour.
