Hemi, I see a lot of the covered hoppers and open hoppers and gondolas every day, but I never have caught motive power yet!
Andy, Cheyenne, WY is a goldmine for cool, old stuff, especially steam engines! UP's steam crew stores tons of tools and parts in many of the boxcars near the roundhouse, and the F units are in storage till a buyer takes them off their hands. The E units, not shown, are for parts.
It seems this time of year anything with wheels on it that can carry grain is put into service. Emptys heading east, then a few days later fuul heading back to the Mississippi river at La Crosse Wis. All the storage facilities are emptying out all summer long to get ready for next falls harvest. Most of them hang on till now because this late in the season the prices are up!
Did some railfanning in Denver today, after trying to locate an address, in order to drop off a job application. Found this sitting in the Rio Grande North Yard:
I don't have any shots, but I've seen untouched C&NW GEs both in Oregon and California although it's been a while since I've seen one on the west line out of Chicago.
Hemi, when did you shoot the F7? My first ever encounter with an F unit was an Ex CNW F7 at Suffern, NY on NJ Transit in 1984.
How about this then............. I got the SAME unit today, Aug 22. Was the last helper unit on a loaded FURX coal train.
Hemi, That's a great shot of the 8681. Good to see there are still some untouched C&NW units out there.
Do you still see the F7 running or is it just a junk piece by the roundhouse? I sure would love to see a F7 moving around the yard. F's and E's are my favorites.
Non-vandalized, not renumbered? Yes. Getting to be that way! Anyone seen a green C&NW hopper lately? Boxcab E50
