This may sound a little crazy but how do you come up with switch names and numbers for a ho layout. I will be using Digitrax ds64, tortoise switch machines and using Digitrax throttle to open and close them. Have looked at different layouts, but still confused. Any help much appreciated

I started at the logical "left hand" side of my layout (which, itself, is difficult with an around the wall and closed loop), and then started numbering with even numbers from there. So, DS64 #10 got turnouts 12, 14, 16, 18; DS64 #20 has 22, 24, 26, 28; etc. The reason I skipped the odd numbers was for flexibility if I went back and made changes (which I did). So DS64#11 now has #13, #15 and #17 (no #19).

Of course, I never have to remember the numbers, since I also have control panels with LED indicators and pushbuttons to operate all of them.

How many towns do you have?

How many switches do you have?

When I had my switches numbered I started with the mile marker and then went numerically up toward the next mile post.

    For example:
    Rush City: MP 20
    South switch: 201
    Next in line: 201

    Hinckley: MP 24
    South switch: 241

I've since switched over to key thrown switches, I like that much more.

If you just need station names, follow the example of the prototypes. They named them after people or for the area. Example: mounds on the UP green river sub in Utah has a bunch of mounds around it. For numbering for stationary decoded start with 1 and work your way up.
