Here is the proposed diagram for the New Layout, posted for Telegrapher. It looks good to me!

Telegrapher tells me he will be starting this new layout soon. His Daughter is delivering the lumber to him shortly.

The present proposal is to have double main line track with industrial track spurs off at several places. The ruling grade will be 2% in the mountain areas.

I'll let him fill you in on scenery, and tell what scale, and all the details. :D

Thanks Watash for posting this for me.
This is a N Scale layout of no particular area or railroad. Completely freelance. It will be called K R T Railroad after the first initials of my three kids. I have both steam and diesel engines and plan on running them whenever I feel like it. This layout will be for my own complete enjoyment.
The mine spur towards the top is about half way up the mountain with about a 3 or 4 % grade. This shouldn't make any different as only one engine and possibly 1 or 2 coal cars will travel it.
On both sides of the layout there will be a 2% grade from the bottom to the top and then tunnels. Also a tressel between to 2 mountains over the valley. Any suggestions will be welcome

Move the yard closer to the front of the 2.5 foot wide secton - you will want to do this for serveral reasons.

First - 2.5 feet is a long reach - for a straight main line this usually is not a problem but for yard trackage this will get old quick. Of course you want to put your best rolling stock on display so keep this close so you can show it off and so you can get it on and off the layout with ease.

Second - moving the yard to the front will ease that S curve near the round house and extend the length of you yard.

Moving the yard is not necessary as there is a isle along that edge to reach all equipment. Thanks anyway.

On second thought, maybe I will move the yard over about 3 or 4 inches to get it away from the double main line as the lines will be on a 2% grade.

On Third thought, I like the idea of moving the yard way over for longer tracks

    Thanks Rob

great help, thanks. I too am building layout very similar in a 8' x 13' room. My question has to do with yard. I have a dogbone, with the yard coming off of the end, yet it too has a loop. My design for the yard and track around it are almost identical. I have the yard along an 8 foot wall. How long should I make the yard, and should I have switches at both ends, or should I keep it has it is with a ladder on the left side, and each siding ending with a bumper on the right side? Your design helped me quite a bit. Thanks.

It's great to see your layout is getting active again Dick. [IMG] An interesting plan and good advice from Rob.
Barry, many folks do double end yards and just as many do single end yards. Double takes up a lot of room so single ending gives more storage trackage. It all depends on the way you wish to use the yard.

I have moved the yard to the left of the right side as suggested and on the left side I moved the 2 main lines over to the right and added another industry track

in the area of the turntable, and on the inside of the 'U', what is the radius of the left hand curve. It looks sharp? As I mentioned earlier, I like your layout, I'm trying to adapt this yard to my layout.

I'm curious about your yard also. It looks like you plan on it being about 5 feet long. Have you given any thought to how long your yard ladders will be? I imagine that you will be using #4 turnouts in the yard. For 6 tracks that will still be almost two feet for the ladder on each end. You might have planned on a small yard, but in my limited experiance there is never to much space in the yard.

To make the yard bigger I would run the mainline behind the business district. You could still run some industry track into the district. For the mine spur you could move the trestle a foot or so to the right and have the spur go under the trestle and behind the mountain. The mine could be on the other side of the mountain which would give it some visual distance or the mine spur could lead to hidden staging under the left penninsula.

    Good luck with construction.

That curve was pretty sharp. When I moved the yard over to the left edge eliminated that sharp curve. Maybe I can Email the new plan to Watash and he can post it for me here.
