Well, having grown up in upstate NY, I can't let us forget about the Adirondack Branch. Though I was bron in PC years, I still remember the trains chuggin by our driveway to our summerhouse at Mt Arab lake. Then there was the Adirondack Railway for the 80 Olympics, but that was a crazy fiasco. I still remember when the train had to stop for water at our lake while I was swimming. Took a long time because the tracks were/are a good 25 feet or so up a steep bank from the lake, and they needed to use buckets. Again, why I didn't use my trusty Kodak 110 camera I'll never know.
Mike, why did that train to the Olympics need water in 1980? Surely there was no steam running then. Diesel with a steam generator to power the passenger cars? I really want to get back to the old home country and ride the Adirondack Scenic, from Utica to wherever it ends now, used to be Thendara. :teeth:
It was water for the radiator if I remember right. I know it was an orange alco RS something, might have been an RS-3. I found out a few years ago that it was a former FEC diesel. The train now goes quite a bit further than Thendara. The next goal is to open Saranac to Tupper last I knew. What part of the Adirondacks are you from? I spent my first 14 summers up there with my dad's family. I'm actually from the Hudson Valley. I remember the Catskill Branch pretty well, and the Wallkill branch too.
I was raised in Little Falls, which I guess would be in the foothills of the Adirondacks. Went to Boy Scout camp at White Lake, near Woodgate, and Raquette Lake. Have toured all around Saranac, Lake Placid, etc. Beautiful country. :teeth:
What stations would have been along that line? Am pretty certain I have a train order from Thendara. Look at the NYC&HR thread, for a Saranac Inn, and Tupper Lake Jct flimsy. Boxcab E50
From a TT earlier than the time in question, in 1952 the Adirondack Division started at Utica, NY, and stopped at Forestport, Woodgate, McKeever, Thendara, Big Moose, Beaver River, Brandreth, Sabattis, American Legion, Childwold, Tupper Lake, Sranac Inn, Lake Clear Jct., Saranac Lake, and Lake Placid, 141.3 miles. :nerd: Do you have any flimsies from any of those stations?
