The historic Bay Line (Atlanta & St. Andrews Bay) depot is to be destroyed at the hands of a developer from Georgia. http://www.newsherald.com/headlines/article.display.php?a=2857 Hopefully the Historical Society of Bay County will be able to save as many articles as they can to preserve the history.
Some people have loads of money and no regard for history or for anything that doesn't fit nicely on a spreadsheet.
Sad. No efforts by locals to acquire and preserve it? I suppose not. In time, they'll recognize their mistake. Boxcab E50
It really is too bad. In Oregon, most of our old depots were made mostly of wood, so they lend themselves well to being jacked up and moved, which has actually happened in a number of cases. While this is not always the most ideal from a strict historical preservation background, it is, in my humble opinion, better than being demolished and lost forever. One notable exception to the wood depot rule this is the Oregon Electric Station in Eugene, which is primarily a masonry structure and has actually been turned into a restaurant next the rail line.
